Expanding Your Horizons Gateway Project

Expanding Your Horizons NetworkThe Washington Expanding Your Horizons Gateway Project was originally funded by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

The state of Washington has 10 to 15 Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conferences each year. These events are designed to nurture girls' interest in science and math courses and to encourage them to consider science and math based career options such as engineering, computer science, and physical science. The EYH Gateway Project aimed to provide a central point of presence for all the EYH conferences in Washington and to deliver services and resources designed to assist conference coordinators in maximizing the quality and capacity of EYH conferences. Through the Gateway Project, coordinators of Washington’s EYH conferences have benefited from services and resources including a registration database, assessment and evaluation tools, conference materials, and payment of conference fees with the National EYH Network.

Since inception, EYH has benefited thousands of girls and young women in more than 22 states across the nation. More information about the Expanding Your Horizons Network can be found at their Web site.

  • Conference Site Recruitment
Worked with state AAUW (American Association of University Women) leaders to identify potential conference sites and coordinators in areas of need.
  • General Support to Conference Sites
Answered questions regarding EYH conference planning and details from conference coordinators and parents and teachers. Provided advice to new conference sites, such as in Yakima, and on new tools, such as the national registration database.
  • Facilitated Coordination Between Sites
Tools such as the Web Portal and listserv encouraged nearby sites to share resources and coordinate in terms of referring volunteers and presenters. Conferences that filled early referred girls to other sites.
  • Liaison to National Network
Sent updates to the EYH Network for their conference listings, distributed conference planning packets and materials to sites, and served as the contact between state sites and the national network.
  • Publicity
Advertised EYH conferences at events, conferences and wrote an article for the AAUW newsletter.

The Gateway Project supported coordinators of Washington’s Expanding Your Horizons conferences through the following resources:

  • Web Portal
The EYH Gateway Project Web site contains links to materials and information to help conference coordinators plan and manage EYH conferences. Coordinators can also place their conference brochure on this site for easy download by interested parties.
  • Assessment and Evaluation
EYH conferences use a variety of tools to evaluate their conferences, including surveys for students, presenters and volunteers. The EYH Gateway Web site hosts a sample of conference evaluation tools that EYH conferences in Washington have used, available for coordinators to adapt for their site.
  • Information Distribution and Resource Sharing via Listserv
An EYH listserv links current and past conference coordinators and committee members. Postings include conference updates, resources from EdLab Group and the EYH Network, and discussion threads of common conference issues.
